American sportswear is so ubiquitous in the States that it’s hard to separate the vanilla connotations from the clothing, let alone make it appealing or progressive. In the case of NYC based Johanna Bloomfield, she deftly avoids the pitfalls with her Johannes Faktotum menswear line. Her pieces have a much-needed sophisticated appeal. A/W 2010 channels varsity jackets, preppy school sweaters, and football gear. I’ve posted looks from all three of her collections, but be sure to click over to see more (and click photo above to enlarge)
I’ll bet everyone here has lost count of how many times they’ve heard/read some stranger, family member, friend, etc. bang on about how important it is to fill your closet with pieces that will work with most everything you own. Blah, blah, boring, right? It may get tiresome to keep hearing it, but alas, it’s true. Of course, staples don’t have to mean unremarkable pieces you won’t remember as soon as you shut your closet door, and it doesn’t mean you can’t have a bit of fun with them. Style and practicality don’t have to be mutually exclusive.
Jeffrey Monteiro’s clothing is simple without being mundane. I’m especially loving the pants in the F/W 09 collection. There is a lot in this collection that is incredibly sophisticated, wearable, and essential. (Don’t forget to click the pictures to enlarge.)
Deborah Sweeney does sophisticated girly.
You can find some of her pieces on intermixonline.com and revolveclothing.com

Japanese designer, Miki Fukai, has a knack for manipulating fabric into sensuous, organic shapes. Her pieces feel far from forced or artificial, in fact, it would be hard to imagine the fabric being utilized for any other purpose.
Pieces above are from her A/W 2006 and S/S 07 collections.
