Mandy Coon

August 27th, 2010

There is an opulent softness to Mandy Coon’s clothing that keeps me from dismissing it as more of the same gothic frippery that’s been dominating fashion circles for the past few years. Yeah, there’s lots of black and black leather, and chains but it’s nicely tempered with a milky peach toned silk, chunky knits, and humour in the shape of a crushed velvet bunny bag. Her silhouettes aren’t aggressively hard-edged and I think that’s what makes the difference

Richter-Switala

April 7th, 2010

Kamilla Richter and Katrin Switala of Richter – Switala combine soft draping with printed geometric shapes in their most recent collection (or at least the most recent collection posted on their website!) to pleasant effect (you know the drill-click the image to enlarge). Since I don’t know German, I was only able to pick up a little information about the pair, and it doesn’t appear that they regularly produce collections, but really I have no idea. Definitely some interesting work and I’m curious to see where they end up

John Rocha

March 26th, 2010

I can’t really understand why I haven’t ever heard of John Rocha before. Not that I’m that particularly on top of everything ‘Fashion’, but I’ve been following the fashion world since my teens, and perhaps I can blame memory loss, but I can’t really ever recall hearing or seeing anything about the designer. Apparently, he’s been around since the 80s and has done quite well for himself (diffusion lines, etc). He’s considered part of the British fashion scene, but Brit fashion isn’t really easy to ignore. Let’s just chalk it up to utter obliviousness on my part! Anyways, his clothing has a floaty, frilly, eccentric sort of sensibility, that I, who wouldn’t be caught dead in something considered frilly, really like. And it’s not really that this clothing is frilly in the traditional sense. I particularly adore his crochet work, which defies all of the conventional granny tablecloth/doily connotations. I’ve posted photos from both his SS 2010 and AW 2010 collections. Both collections could benefit from some editing, but there are some great pieces from both, AW being my favourite (click photo below to enlarge). Definitely click over to the designer’s site, but be warned, it’s incredibly frustrating to browse

Prose Studio

While I’m not particularly crazy about UK label Prose Studio‘s latest collection, I am smitten with their previous one, and looove the dress in the middle

Willow

July 28th, 2009

I’ve posted previously about Aussie label, Willow, but I visited again recently and wanted to re-post. Since my initial feature, Willow has been popping up all over and rightfully so.

The line remains characterized by soft draping and wearability, which makes the line a nice alternative to the recent affinity for aggressive, hard edged silhouettes.

I’ve posted photos from the A/W 08/09 and S/S 09 collections. You lovers of the current thigh high and beyond boots will like the A/W collection. You can find Willow at quite a few online retailers now.
