Kaight

October 14th, 2009

Sustainability, social responsibility, organic materials. I get it. Hell, I was an environmental studies major, and my job is in an environmental field! But, oh how tired I am of the swirling vortex of environmentally related buzzwords that whiz about all things consumer these days.

So instead of banging you all over the head about how more socially conscious you need to be about your clothing choices, I’ll instead direct you to NYC based, Kaight, who prides itself on offering a wide selection of ‘green’, ‘eco-friendly’, and ‘ethical’ clothing and accessories. I’m not gonna lie-of course green is good, I just won’t be feeling all smugly self-righteous when I buy something from them. Seriously though, they’ve got some great items so be sure to visit. Frances May Pt. 1

Believe it or not, but it took me almost my entire week here in Portland to realize that just on the opposite side of the block that the Ace is in there was a boutique bursting with some of my favourite labels, notably Rachel Comey. I’m not completely oriented here even though we’ve been walking and riding public transportation everywhere. I spotted Comey’s Metalsmith’s dress in the window of Frances May when I happened to glance out of the bus window and knew I had to stop in.

Well, today I did and am I ever glad I did. The selection is fantastic and skillfully edited, and Ashley who was watching over the shop while we were there was amazing. Portlanders, you are some of the nicest people I’ve met yet. I’ve been nothing but continually impressed with how friendly and open everyone is and it’s been an utter joy to shop here. Ashley gave us the scoop on Portland (her family has lived in Portland for four generations!), cool places to visit (including other clothing boutiques), and we even got to have a laugh over our dairyland, my dear diary, and livejournal histories.

Aside from lots of great pieces from Rachel Comey, I spotted items from Clu, A.P.C., Vena Cava, Bodkin, Mociun, Lover, Duskin, YMC, and many others. The coolest part about Frances May is that it’s owned by Brooklyn art school graduate Pamela Baker-Miller and her grandmother, Connie Codding. Fantastic, no?

I know I’ve stumbled over the website a few times in the past, but it got lost in my bookmarks and I’m ever so glad to have rediscovered it. Brannan and I both found some fantastic pieces on the sales rack, and I got to try on the Metalsmith’s dress for future consideration-hee. Again this is another really special boutique in Portland that needs to be added to everyone’s regular bookmarks. Don’t forget all that you can enlarge the photos by simply clicking on them!

Light Vision Shop

June 24th, 2009

Extremely awkward models aside, San Francisco shop, Light Vision stocks some nice pieces from tiny labels where everything is handmade by the designers. The site is only a few months old so it’ll be exciting to watch it expand.

I recognized well-known label Mociun, and the conceptual Open Clothed, which is also stocked at previously featured favourite Portland shop, Stand Up Comedy. If you want to support independent designers and the shops that support them, Light Vision is a good place to start!

Anica + Daily Wear

April 23rd, 2009

I featured SF boutique, Anica, many moons ago, but I recently revisited and had to post again.

A couple things that are a must mention:

Owner Rati Sahi is the sweetest person ever! I recently made a purchase (see daily wear pics below) and she was wonderfully helpful and communicated directly with me. Rati-you’re a doll!

Having genuine, personal contact with the people that run online stores just makes the shopping experience a dream. So guys, shop here, you won’t be disappointed. :)

Also, Sahi’s philosophy of offering classic basics is perfectly evident in her online offerings. Nothing is flashy and the items aren’t necessarily trendy, but I found myself wanting most everything on the site.

I purchased the amazing wood wood drop crotch khaki pants that are favourites of Sahi’s, and adore them. I think I just found the base for a daily uniform-ha.

I’ve taken to photoshopping ridiculous photos (kelp forest for the ones below) into the backgrounds of my daily wear shots as you can see. I loved the pairing of the Rachel Comey heels with the pants as shown on the shop’s site so I did the same.
