Guest Post: I’M REVOLTING Takes on Winter

February 9th, 2011

Some of you may follow I’M REVOLTING, and if you don’t you should. SW has created an online space that meticulously gathers and displays a fascinating mix of things from the art, fashion, and design worlds with a splash of the personal (hello amazing flea market finds!). SW graciously agreed to share the things she’d love to surround herself with, if she lived in a colder clime, during the waning days of winter here on Pour Porter. Enjoy!

There’s no fashion challenge quite like the middle-end of winter. After months of swaddling, we long for: the freedom of a single layer, the simplicity of nothing much. But I miss the cold weather. I miss the jolt of morning air and color in my cheeks, the frozen lake and unplowed streets.
Last month, in Cambodia, I met a man who told me that just once, before he died, he’d like to see snow. You can have the harsh summer light, the flimsiness. I miss snow.
For those of you who don’t live in Los Angeles, where it’s been 80 degrees all week, here are my picks for the death throes of winter.

John Rocha

March 26th, 2010

I can’t really understand why I haven’t ever heard of John Rocha before. Not that I’m that particularly on top of everything ‘Fashion’, but I’ve been following the fashion world since my teens, and perhaps I can blame memory loss, but I can’t really ever recall hearing or seeing anything about the designer. Apparently, he’s been around since the 80s and has done quite well for himself (diffusion lines, etc). He’s considered part of the British fashion scene, but Brit fashion isn’t really easy to ignore. Let’s just chalk it up to utter obliviousness on my part! Anyways, his clothing has a floaty, frilly, eccentric sort of sensibility, that I, who wouldn’t be caught dead in something considered frilly, really like. And it’s not really that this clothing is frilly in the traditional sense. I particularly adore his crochet work, which defies all of the conventional granny tablecloth/doily connotations. I’ve posted photos from both his SS 2010 and AW 2010 collections. Both collections could benefit from some editing, but there are some great pieces from both, AW being my favourite (click photo below to enlarge). Definitely click over to the designer’s site, but be warned, it’s incredibly frustrating to browse
