You’d have to pretty much be living under the proverbial rock if you aren’t aware of the sudden revival in interest in ‘classic’ style. It’s a bit ironic that it’s become a trend. I won’t dissect the why, there are plenty of other places to read about that, but I do want to talk about my personal experience with it.
My paternal grandmother always wore straight leg denim, an oxford shirt with the top buttons undone, her gold charm bracelets, and brown penny loafers. I can’t really remember her wearing anything else, but we didn’t visit her that much and I only remember her as an older woman. (I got one of her blue striped oxford shirts as a hand-me-down and was most disappointed when the elbows finally wore out.) You can’t really go wrong with that combination, and I’ve been thinking quite a bit more about streamlining my daily wear to mimic that look, and saving the more daring things for more special occasions. And of course, I’ve only posted the basics below -they can and should be livened up with interesting accessories

Wow. Every piece from A Piece Apart’s S/S 2010 collection is subtle perfection. NYC based Laura Cramer and Starr Hout have created a line that can go anywhere and be worn with anything. I quite like the play between the deep jewel tones and pale neutrals in the latest collection-it sort of epitomizes summer for me. Gorgeous stuff. (Thanks to Hey Susy for the heads-up on this label!) For the several years I’ve been following Maria Cornejo, I’ve come to appreciate the consistency of her vision. So even though I’ve posted about her plenty of times previously, it’s been a little while and I wanted to post again. Cornejo’s pieces are always so wonderfully draped and classic. She’s gotten pretty well known in the past few years, but that fortunately hasn’t resulted in the dilution of her work. I quite like the ocean inspired colours and patterns in her latest S/S 2010 collection
Yes guys, it’s time to start thinking about summer footwear. As I’m perpetually on the hunt for wedges and flats that don’t make me look like your friendly neighborhood bridge troll, I was happy to discover former industrial designer turned footwear designer, Martha Davis. I’m loving the neutral colours with the occasional splash of teal, and there’s something classic about the silhouettes of all of her shoes. Stockists are listed on the website, and you can view the two previous collections as well
Sisters Madelon Lanteri-Laura and Natalie Vodegel are Dutch, but their label Polder is quintessentially French. Both moved to Paris to study archeology and art history during their college years and thenworked for French designers following university.
The shapes are classic, the colours soft, and all of the pieces have such an effortlessly cool quality. The label has been around since 2000 and I recall stumbling across some of their pieces over the years, but it has managed to maintain a low profile, which I think fits the brand perfectly.
