Ssense was one of those online boutiques that I browsed on the rare occasion, but was never very interested in due to cheesy models, cheesy styling, and a meh selection of labels. Fast forward to a few months ago and now I’m definitely going to become more of a frequent visitor! The owners got smart and ditched the corny SoCal models and styling, and most of the Hollywood starlet labels and focused instead on the demographic who likes a side of intelligence with their style. You can now find cerebral, arty favourites like Obesity and Speed, MM6 Maison Martin Margiela, Rogan, Tsumori Chisato, and Wayne. (You can click on both images to enlarge)
I’m going light on the writing this week, but I have to say that Context is a pretty fantastic men’s boutique with an impressive, comprehensive selection.
Sustainability, social responsibility, organic materials. I get it. Hell, I was an environmental studies major, and my job is in an environmental field! But, oh how tired I am of the swirling vortex of environmentally related buzzwords that whiz about all things consumer these days.
So instead of banging you all over the head about how more socially conscious you need to be about your clothing choices, I’ll instead direct you to NYC based, Kaight, who prides itself on offering a wide selection of ‘green’, ‘eco-friendly’, and ‘ethical’ clothing and accessories. I’m not gonna lie-of course green is good, I just won’t be feeling all smugly self-righteous when I buy something from them. Seriously though, they’ve got some great items so be sure to visit. Ok, here’s a post for the menfolk since I haven’t done that for awhile and Brannan is busy with other things. South Willard is a menswear shop located in LA that’s all about classic, well-made pieces and an unfussy and sophisticated shopping experience. You can find everything from blazers to handmade pashmina scarves, and the selection is extensive but nicely edited. The shop even carries a few pieces that have been made exclusively for them.

Well, back to Portland for today. I’m bit disappointed that I didn’t do a little more nosing around for great shops there until it was too late to visit them. Anyways, I posted a link to Una on the McTega post, but it really deserves its own separate post.
I spaced the fact that Una is in Portland while I was there until Ashley at Frances May mentioned it, and I spotted it in a slightly older edition of the eat.shop. guide for Portland that our neighbors kindly lent us. Unfortunately, they close at 6pm on Friday night and it was already quarter after 5 when I checked the hours to see if we could make it. Sad, but it gives me a placed to visit the next time we’re there!
Anyways, it’ll come as no surprise that I like Una because owner, Giovanna, stocks lots of independents and even some very talented local designers. While there is no real webshop to speak of, they do have a blog where you can see their current items and call or email to purchase. The items are nicely photographed and everything they carry feels so cohesive-great editing! They have a fantastic inventory of accessories.
