Sophie Hulme

April 16th, 2009

Ok, I have to admit it, Sophie Hulme makes sequins look really cool. Not that I ever had anything against them, it’s just that they aren’t often given a chance to expand beyond their usual application. Ha.

I stumbled across Hulme’s site last night and was swooning over the sequin jackets, and then suddenly realized, when I recognized the boxy sequin dresses, that Pixie Market recently started carrying the line .

The line’s ultimate appeal for me though, is the use of traditional masculine silhouettes. Unsurprisingly, I keep finding myself drawn to clothing that walks the line. Everything is loose and oversized so it looks like you raided your boyfriend/husband/brother/dad’s closet.

Did anyone notice the ‘snowflake’ sequins are actually composed of fighter jet shapes? And how about the Members Only style jacket with a bow on the back or the men’s parka shapes smothered in sequins? Love it.

I’ve posted pieces from A/W 08, S/S 09 and A/W 09. Be sure to click the ‘read more’ link to see several more photos after the jump

Matthew Ames

October 4th, 2008

There isn’t much from the 1980′s that I like or ever liked. I remember hating much of the decade when I was living through it (young as I was!). However, there are a few things from that time that remain appealing, and I don’t mean in the tired ironic sense.

Designer Matthew Ames manages to revive and freshen the boxy, baggy Japanese look of the 80′s with his Autumn 08 collection. There is nothing that feels contrived or derivative about his pieces, and yet they immediately bring to mind a style that is associated with the decade of excess.

Pieces featured are mostly from the fall collection, but there are a couple from his Spring collection, as well. Be sure to check out the website.
