I’ve been in a practical state of mind lately and that’s probably due in large part to the growing itch to start spring cleaning early. I’ve linked to Brook Farm General Store before but I couldn’t resist revisiting because they have so many, you know, practical things that have now been added to my wishlist. I’ve always found terracotta appealing and these lamps were too fantastic to not post even though I try to mostly stay on topic (ahem style) here on the blog! Benjamin Hubert Studio via Furfin
Ok, so this isn’t fashion related, but hey, it’s my personal blog and who doesn’t like food?
I love baking. As with gardening I find it a wonderfully meditative process with an unbeatable prize at the end. Well, I was so lucky to receive a copy of Organic and Chic from the amazing Sarah Magid a week or so ago. Sarah, thank you! This was a really special gift that made my month!

I sat down for a couple hours and read through it, and was amazingly inspired. There is such a wonderfully warm, handmade quality to Sarah’s creations that you just can’t find in most other baking books, not to mention that everything is organic. I love the stories of how her mother inspired her passion for baking and how she’s carrying on that tradition with her own children.
I’d already made her chocolate cupcakes with espresso icing thanks to a recent design*sponge post (thank you Karyn!) where Sarah gives a video tutorial on how to make the cupcakes. The cupcake recipe is practically an exact copy of a family chocolate cake recipe I sadly lost a few years ago.
Once I received the book, I had to make the cupcakes with marshmallow frosting. I halved the frosting recipe because I was worried it would be too sweet, and immediately regretted it after actually tasting it. It’s light, mildly sweet, and addictive! See the results below.
I can’t wait to try Sarah’s fondant-free cakes, although I’m sure it’s going to take a few tries on my part before I get them looking presentable!
The book doesn’t just contain cake and cupcake recipes, though. There are plenty recipes for cookies, pies, tarts, and what Sarah calls reformed junk food. If you love baking, I highly recommend her book. It’s chock full of delicious recipes and beautiful photographs.

If you’re one who appreciates and is always on the hunt for clothing lines with a cerebral bent, you have to put up with a certain degree of pretentiousness. Whether it’s a long-winded ideological diatribe that accompanies each collection, a vague, art house style film in which the clothes are displayed, or a tongue twister of a label name, it’s impossible to avoid. Not that I’m complaining-I do love a side of the intellectual with my clothing, but sometimes I want to find some intelligent clothing with a name that doesn’t make me giggle when I say it!
Anyways, Austrian designer Christiane Gruber chose the metaphysical referencing name of Awareness and Consciousness for her label. Granted there is no design philosophy or artist’s statement on her site, but these aren’t shallow pieces. Draping and soft, floating silhouettes are the key to her designs, but there is nothing here that is utterly unwearable or simply serves as a vehicle for the designer’s latest brainy obsession.
I’ve posted looks from the S/S 09 and A/W 09 collections.

This has nothing to do with style or clothing, but I couldn’t help but be inspired by the beautiful contrast between the colour of the wood grain and the gold leaf.

Anyways, I’ve been wanting to get a bit more personal with the blog, and thanks to recently being inspired by a friend and a sketch blog, I think I’m ready to be more regular about it. This blog will always center on my clothing and accessories finds, but I’d like to add a little bit of a daily wear element to it, along with inspirations (whether clothing related or not), and possibly some of my own drawings or paintings.Something for me to look forward to!
