Inspiration: Andrei Tarkovsky

May 12th, 2010

I just have a quick minute to make an inspiration post. Andrei Tarkovsky is one of our favourite directors. Every one of his films is indescribably beautiful, and I’ve recently felt the need to go back and watch the ones we’ve seen and the ones we’ve yet to see. Anyways, enjoy these clips from Stalker, Solaris, and The Mirror

  1. We love Tarkovsky too! Mirror is probably my favourite. Thanks for posting these :)

    • Golubka,

We’ve seen all but 3 or 4 of his films b/c at the time we were devouring them they weren’t on dvd yet! It’s so, so difficult to pick a favourite, but I do love The Sacrifice and Andrei Rublev. I want to rewatch them all now along with some of Kieslowski’s films too. I miss being able to watch things, I’ve been so busy!

  2. Thank you for posting these. I’ve read more about Tarkovsky than I’ve seen, and now I must start watching. Those long, fluid takes are beautiful and the way he uses sound is striking. (And interesting that you mentioned Kieslowski, because he is my favorite filmmaker.)

    • Leanne,

WATCH EVERY ONE. Most of his work is nonlinear, but the point isn’t really plot, and it’s so perfectly done. We’ve been so busy of late that we’ve had no time to watch a lot of films, which is one of our favourite things to do. And yes re: Kieslowski. He’s another one I want to go back and watch. I also have to recommend Swedish Director, Roy Andersson, who is a contemporary director and most known for his commercials. Anyway his Songs from the Second Floor is just amazing and full of humour but depth as well. He uses the long static shot much like Tarkovsky, although many people compare Andersson to Ingmar Bergman except with humour. Here is one of my favourite scenes from Songs:
