Cut-and-Paste Wardrobe: The Shorts with Tights Edition

A coworker and I were discussing the whole shorts and tights look recently. I like this style and I basically consider it to be a classic even though it’s having a bit of a moment right now. I remember the preppy version quite well from my childhood (corduroy shorts, penny loafers, and fair isle crewneck anyone? Ha!). So how does one pull off the combo now? I don’t like any combination that includes denim cut offs or denim cut offs with dippy 80s lace tights, so I went in search of something more mature and less fashion-victimy. In fact, I put together two versions, one being a little more casual than the other, and after the jump. This really has gotten addictive

  1. Such cute tights.

  2. I am currently all about shorts and tights (especially opaque) for the fall/winter season. I love how it allows you to incorporate your summer clothing. All you need are some cute booties (or a nice pair of oxfords) and your fave jacket and you’re ready to go!

    • Teresa,
I <3 opaque too, and yes hooray for extending summer wardrobe pieces into fall and even winter. I love oxfords with them too, but being short I have to make sure the shorts are shorter too, and then I just feel conspicuous!

      • I feel your pain about finding the right short length. I found this (http://www.style.com/slideshows/fashionshows/S2008RTW/RCOMEY/RUNWAY/00030m.jpg) pair on super sale yesterday, and was overjoyed until I looked down and realized they were only a couple inches shy of my knees. Not a good look!

        • Steph,

D’oh! That’s the unfortunate thing with being the average height of 5’3-5’4″. Stuff that looks amazing on the models ends up looking like you’re a little kid trying on your mother’s clothing-haha! That’s a bummer. I made some decent shorts by cutting and hemming a pair of pants that were always just a bit too short.

  3. I gave up shorts+tights a couple of years ago, after they became all the rage here. These looks really make me want to grab a tweed pair and wear them non-stop with thick tights and a neutral palette, + boots and brogues…they look awesome!

    • Cycnoches,

Ha, let me guess denim cutoffs and tights became the rage? I think that’s such a gross look, but other fabrics most definitely work. I’d love to see what you come up with!

      • It’s more about all the gross fabric shorts which are TOO TIGHT and worn with gross boots..I can’t stand! I have been looking for a nice pair of tweed shorts, but I couldn’t find any where I can afford them…thank god sales are near..I am definitely getting myself a pair, they are so versatile! The winter version of khaki shorts (summer staple)!

  4. I love these cut and paste posts. Still can’t believe how quickly you’re able to whip them up.

  5. Great looks – you know I love some dark tights with dress shorts. Not sure about the knee-pad tights (could just be that the blogs are overrun with images of Lindsay Lohan and her knee pad tights, even though I try to avoid that kind of news) – but I like that you off-set them with the Rachel Comey clogs. And, of course, everything else is spot on. I might have to track that Vena Cava top in the first look until I make it my own…

    • Ha, yes. Are your black shorts wool? Love that. Oh lord, I had no idea. Those Hansel from Basel tights have been around for at least 3-4 years and I’ve always liked them. Leave it to LL to ruin something good. :(
I got to see that vena cava shirt in person and the print is just beautiful.
